Tips to Help You Nail a Panel Interview

Panel interview moments can feel overwhelming at first. You walk into the room and see three or more interviewers seated across from you, each holding your CV and preparing to ask questions.

Your thoughts start racing and nerves kick in. But here’s what many candidates forget. A panel interview is simply a conversation with decision-makers who want to understand how you think, speak, and solve problems.

Here’s how to walk in confident and walk out with the job.

Before the interview, ask for the names and roles of the panelists. Then do a little homework. You could: check out their LinkedIn profile or even look for shared connections or interests

It is easy to focus on a single interviewer during a panel interview. However, there are certain challenges when interviewing on a panel.

If you have prior information about the panelist’s roles or if they introduced themselves before the interview, you might be tempted to look at the most senior member the whole time. This is highly discouraged!

Sometimes, someone on the panel seems friendlier, more engaged. Naturally, you direct most answers their way. Don’t do that.

Instead: Make eye contact with each person, include everyone when you respond and keep your tone warm and open

I once fumbled a panel interview by being too “textbook” as I presented a lot of theory.

What works better? ,“At my last job, we had a tough client who nearly cancelled. I stepped in, listened, and got them to stay with double the order.”

A real story beats a generic answer every time.

You might get hit with tough questions like “What’s your biggest weakness? “Or “Why should we choose you?”

Don’t panic just be honest but strategic. Show growth and also self-awareness. For example, “I used to struggle with saying no. But I’ve learned that setting clear boundaries actually helps teams work better.”

Final question: “Do you have anything else to add?” or “Do you have a question for us?”

This is your moment to show them you are capable. Don’t say, “I don’t have any question.” You could say something like, “I’m excited about the chance to work with this team.
