3 Ways to Stand Out from Competition in an Interview

I know many of you can relate how job interviews can feel like auditions you didn’t rehearse for. Imagine how you walk in. Smile and feel a little anxious.  And you’re thinking, how do I make them remember me?

To stand out from the competition in an interview for any individual looking forward to acing the interview and ultimately getting a job offer, it is important for you to demonstrate your skills, experience, and knowledge in a way that shows that you are the best candidate for the job.

The good news is you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to stand out. Here’s how.

Anyone can list skills. But stories? They stick. Think about it. Who would you remember more:

Someone who says, “I’m great at problem-solving.” Or someone who shares how they fixed a major issue at their last job in one day?

So before your next interview, prep 2–3 quick stories that show:A problem you faced, what you did about it and how it worked out

Researching the company is basic prep. Most candidates do it.

But here’s what most don’t do, bring an idea to the table. For example an IT expert when I interviewed at a tech company, should not just say he liked their app.

He should show them a quick sketch of a feature he thought users would love.

You can do this too: Read their latest blog post and check their reviews

Then ask yourself, what would I improve, add, or ask if I already worked here? Doesn’t have to be big. Just thoughtful.

“What’s the culture like?” “Do you offer training?” These are fine. But they’re everywhere.

Want to really stand out? Ask questions that show you’re already thinking like a team member.

Try: “What does success look like in the first 90 days?” “If I joined tomorrow, what would you want me to focus on first?”

These examples aren’t just questions.

They show you’re planning ahead and that you want to contribute.

You just need to be real. Prepared, curious and most of all, make them picture you in the role before the interview ends. That’s how you stand out.
