Why Can’t I Get a Job? 5 Simple Ways to Fix Your CV

So you’ve sent out your CV to 10, maybe 20 jobs. And you’re still not getting interviews. Frustrating, right? You keep asking yourself, “What am I doing wrong?”

Take John who had the right experience and skills for the dream job he was hoping to get. He sent out his CV but didn’t tailor it to the specific job description. His CV was tossed away and he never got any feedback. I am sure many of us have been in that situation, your qualifications align but you just can’t get that callback!

This is a problem faced by many professionals because they use one  CV for every job application. What if you could make it stand out and increase your chances of landing the job?

He visited our office and had a consultation with a CV expert, his CV was customized to focus on his key strengths and to match the job requirements.

After sending out his application this time, he beat the applicant tracking system (ATS) and landed the job.

Here’s the truth: Most job seekers don’t have a bad CV. They just have one that’s not helping them get hired.

The good news? You can fix that.

Your CV isn’t just a list of what you’ve done. It’s your story.

But too many people treat it like a dumping ground. What hiring managers want to see: What you’re good at. What results you’ve delivered. What makes you different

So instead of saying: “I am a hardworking, honest person looking for an opportunity to grow.” Try this: “Customer service rep with 3 years of experience helping clients and boosting satisfaction scores by 20%.”

Clear. Focused. Real.

Think of your CV like a website. If it doesn’t have the right words?

Recruiters (and their software) won’t find it. What you need to do: Use keywords from the job ad. Focus on phrases like “project management,” “data entry,” or “sales support”. Keep it natural. Don’t overdo it.

Tip, If the job post says “team leader,” your CV should too. Not just “supervisor.”

Listing your job duties isn’t enough. You need to show what changed because of your work.

Think: Before and after. Here’s how: Instead of: “Handled customer complaints” Try: “Resolved 95% of customer issues on first contact” Instead of: “Managed social media pages” Try: “Increased Instagram followers by 5,000 in 3 months”

See the difference? One tells a story. The other just takes up space.

Let’s keep it simple. No tiny fonts. No fancy designs. No long blocks of text

Recruiters spend seconds scanning your resume.

Make it easy for them: Use clear section headings. Stick to one page (if possible) and use bullet points instead of paragraphs

Think of it like this: Your CV should be more like a menu, less like a novel.

This is a big one. You have to tweak your CV for each role. Sounds like work? It is. But it’s worth it.

Customize by, changing your profile summary to match the role. Swapping out skills that don’t fit. Reordering your work experience based on what’s most relevant.

I once helped a friend apply for two different jobs with two different versions of her CV. She got interviews for both. Just by tweaking a few lines.

Make sure your personality shows through. Even a little.

A short line like, “I enjoy solving tough problems and making systems work better” says a lot.

Writing a great CV doesn’t have to feel like rocket science. Here’s what you need to remember: Keep it focused, use the right words, show real results, make it easy to read and tailor it to every job

That’s it.
