When To Be A Manager And When To Be A Leader ( FREE ZOOM EVENT)
What if the real challenge at work isn’t being a leader or a manager, but knowing when to be which?
James had recently been promoted to manage a team of 50 at a well-established textile company. With his structured mindset and attention to detail, he quickly brought efficiency to the department. Production targets were consistently achieved as schedules flowed smoothly.
Everything seemed to be working well from the outside, and the team appeared productive, but underneath that calm structure, the energy had shifted. The team had grown disengaged with little collaboration and no sense of ownership, as ideas stopped flowing and problems were left unspoken while everyone quietly did only what was asked of them.
James was puzzled. He showed up daily, stayed involved and made sure operations stayed on track. Wasn’t that what effective management looked like?
The shift became more apparent during a high-pressure moment. A key machine broke down in the middle of a production run, and James stepped in to take control. He assigned tasks, monitored every move, and stayed on top of the progress. The machine was eventually fixed, but the energy on the floor was tense and robotic.
A few days later, when the marketing team missed a client deadline, James tried a different approach. This time, he stepped back, encouraging the team to own the process and trusting them to figure it out. But without clear direction or accountability, confusion set in, and the project fell further behind.
In both scenarios, James wasn’t wrong in what he did, but he had misread what the moment needed. He managed when he should have led, and led when the situation called for management.
James’s struggle is one many supervisors quietly face. They’re expected to keep things running while also inspiring growth, but knowing when to manage and when to lead isn’t always clear. It’s a delicate balance, and when that balance is missed, teams don’t just slow down; they lose energy, direction, and trust.
That’s why we created the training: “When to Be a Manager and When to Be a Leader.” This is a Free Zoom session designed for professionals in supervisory and managerial roles who need clarity in real, high-pressure environments.
