The Heart of HR: Bridgit’s Experience Working in Human Resource

She began her journey as an HR Intern at Corporate Staffing where she built a foundation in key HR areas such as recruitment, policy development, employee engagement, and performance management. Over time, she took on more responsibilities, including managing client HR needs, conducting onboarding and training sessions, and supporting HR projects.
When I asked her what her typical day looks like, here is what she shared “My day begins by reviewing my schedule and prioritizing tasks. I check my emails to address any urgent matters. I update HR documentation, including contracts, policies, and performance reviews as well as handle administrative tasks, such as maintaining employee records, updating leave, and ensuring compliance with employment laws.”
I was eager to understand her journey working in HR and what inspired her to pursue this career and here is what she had to say “My journey in Human Resources began with a strong interest in understanding people and the pivotal role they play in driving organizational success and that is where I chose a course in Human resource management. What inspires me in HR is the dynamic nature of the field—no two days are the same.”
For someone who wants to excel in HR, the essential skills include strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, and a deep understanding of labor laws and HR policies.
Among the challenges that she has faced in HR role include managing employee expectations while aligning them with organizational goals. For instance, employees may seek quicker promotions or higher compensation, which sometimes conflicts with the company’s structure or budget. But she has a way to overcome this “ I prioritize transparent communication, ensure employees understand career progression paths, and emphasize performance as a basis for growth.”
When resolving workplace conflicts, she takes a neutral stance by listening to both parties involved and working towards fair and amicable solutions.
Is continuous learning and professional development vital for HR professionals? I asked her and her answer was yes. She highlighted that it enables HR professionals to stay updated with the industry trends, and best practices and adapt to advancements in technology.
For aspiring HR professionals looking to enhance their skills, Bridgit’s advice is to invest in continuous learning.
