Become a Great Trainer with 5 Effective Tips

I recently had a conversation with Chris, a leadership trainer who took four years to transform from a novice trainer to an expert. “I train the trainers and coach them to perfect their craft. The journey was never a walk in the park because sometimes I would train delighted and active participants and on other occasions, I would encounter a disengaged audience. I didn’t know the best way to win the hearts of audience and make them lively. In the early stages of my career, I would be asked unexpected questions which sometimes were difficult to respond but once I attended a ToT course and got the trainer certification, I became a great trainer.”

It takes time to perfect your skills and a certain set of attributes to be a great trainer. A good facilitator is comfortable when addressing the audience, knowledgeable of the subject matter, and interested in delivering great results.

Regardless of the field you are in, here are tips that will help you become exceptional trainers

1. Understand & Connect With Others

During the training programs, the trainer takes the role of a leader, and empathy is one of the most important skills.

As a trainer, being empathetic can help you to identify the needs of the audience, connect with them and transform the training experience.

Audiences who experience empathy from the trainers are likely to be engaged during the training because they feel valued.

2. Develop a Passion For Learning

For you to be a great trainer you need to be a lifelong learner who aspires to be equipped with up-to-date knowledge by signing up for relevant short courses to become a trainer.

With technological advances, trainers need to adapt to changes and incorporate new tools and strategies to boost the audiences’ learning experiences.

Chris signed up for the training of the trainers’ course which enabled him to develop essential training skills and promote a clear understanding of how he would train effectively and get the best results.

3. Work On Your Organization Skills

Imagine a scenario where the trainer fails to follow the content, is poor in time management, and encounters technical hitches without a backup plan what happens is that the audience will be disengaged.

Organizational skills help the trainer to focus on their time, and resources on work that matters and keeps the audience on track.

4. Understand the Process

The process involves prior preparation to package your content to fit the audience needs. The words you chose, the tone, gestures, and facial expressions play a crucial role in determining if the audience will connect with the message.

If a trainer focuses on the content overlooking the process, it is a sure way of becoming boring, and out of touch with the audience.

Understand the audience, their values, and their expectations to be able to connect with them and deliver effectively.

5. Ask for Honest Feedback

A great way to become a great trainer is by understanding your strengths, weakness, and the areas that you need to focus on.  Get feedback from those around you so you know where to make adjustments.

Do simulation exercises then get automatic feedback or record short videos, and check how you performed and how you could have done better.
