The Power Of Referrals In Job Search: How It Worked For Me!

Have you ever thought of changing to a new career?

Navigating through a career change can be a daunting process but it becomes easier when you understand what you’re good at and what you are passionate about.

Lenard Kahutu is one of the professionals who wanted to venture into the IT industry but found himself in the

analytical chemistry industry. What he encountered in the workplace was different from what he thought he would be doing.

Through a referral, he learned about the Operations Coordinator that we had advertised for our client Associated Battery Manufacturers (EA) Ltd.

Here is his story and a few lessons you can derive from his job search.

Lenard Kahutu is a production management professional with 8 years of experience working in the manufacturing industry and pharmaceutical company. His passion was in IT and Computer Science but I ended up specializing in Analytical Chemistry thinking that he would end up working in a research lab but realized that there was more to this profession.

How long had you been looking for a job?

I spent around three years looking for a job, although I had not fully immersed myself in the job search pool, 2020 is when I began a serious job search.

What motivated you to look for another job?

I stayed with my previous employer for 6 years and gained relevant experience in the field. That motivated me to seek a more challenging role that would help me utilize the skills that I had gained.

What has your job search experience been like?

It was frustrating because most of my job applications went unanswered and that discouraged me.

Where did you hear about this job opportunity?

One of the people who knew that I was looking for a job referred me to CSS and a specific role and after sending my application, I was called for an interview.

Are there any challenges you encountered in your job search process?

Applying for many jobs without feedback discouraged me from applying for other jobs.

How were the application and interview processes?

The process was seamless. My first interview was via ZOOM. I was impressed because I was given a chance to choose a date and time that worked for me.

Did you think you would get the job?

I was not sure that I would get a job because the competition was stiff but I was encouraged when I received constant communication from the recruitment manager. On the other hand, I had prepared myself well for the interview.

Many professionals are looking for a job. What would your advice be to them?

The job market can be competitive but it is important to present yourself as the best fit for the role by connecting with what the employer is looking for in the job description and preparing well for the interview.
